MS-DRG

An MS-DRG is a Medicare Severity Diagnosis Related Group. Medicare groups an inpatient stay into one of these groups and pays the hospital from the group's relative weight. The FY2027 correction notice lists 768 groups. This site copies Table 5 from CMS-1849-CN, dated September 23, 2026. The lookup is at /drg.

MS-DRG

The page shows the title, relative weight, MDC, and medical or surgical type when the file has them. Groups 998 and 999 have no weight in that table. The weight is not a coverage decision.

Questions

MS-DRG, answered

Does the weight decide payment by itself?
No. The relative weight is one input to the inpatient payment formula. The hospital's wage index and other factors also apply. This page does not compute a payment.
