Questions
What is an NDC number?
A National Drug Code is the FDA identifier for a drug product. It has three segments: the labeler (the company), the product (strength and form) and the package size.
How do I convert a 10-digit NDC to 11 digits?
Add a leading zero to the short segment so the code reads 5-4-2. A 4-4-2 code gets a zero in front of the labeler, a 5-3-2 code in front of the product, and a 5-4-1 code in front of the package.
Why does a 10-digit NDC need hyphens?
Without hyphens, 10 digits could be 4-4-2, 5-3-2 or 5-4-1, and each pads to a different 11-digit code. Type the code as printed on the package.
Where does the NDC data come from?
From the FDA NDC directory, which lists every drug a labeler has submitted to FDA, with its name, form, strength, labeler and DEA schedule.
