What an IVR is
An IVR plays recorded or synthesized prompts and listens for keypad tones or a short list of spoken keywords. Each choice moves the caller down a menu tree to a department, a queue, a recorded message, or a self-service function. Practices use IVRs to split calls among scheduling, billing, and nurse lines. Pharmacies often use them for refills by prescription number.
An IVR follows a fixed script. The caller has to map their need onto the options offered. Anything outside the menu ends in a transfer to the operator or voicemail. Deep menus frustrate callers and lead some to hang up. An AI voice agent instead understands natural speech, asks follow-up questions, and can complete or route the request.
Many organizations run both. An AI agent can answer first, or sit behind an IVR option. Rivvi answers inbound calls on the Team plan. When a practice uses an IVR, Rivvi can navigate the menu to reach the right department. Then it warm-transfers the caller with context.
