What Turning 65 means in Medicare
Most people become eligible for Medicare at 65. Their Initial Enrollment Period lasts 7 months, starting 3 months before the month they turn 65 and ending 3 months after it. In that window they can sign up for Part A and Part B, and join a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan. Missing it can mean late penalties.
Medigap has its own clock. The Medigap Open Enrollment Period is 6 months, starting the first month a person is 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During it, insurers generally cannot deny a policy or charge more because of health. After it ends, insurers in most states can use medical underwriting.
That is why brokers work T65 lists. CMS rules still apply: agents cannot cold call, text, or leave unsolicited voicemails. Phone outreach must be requested, such as a returned call or a business reply card asking for contact. Rivvi, a HIPAA-compliant AI workspace, has an action layer for that permitted follow-up, with the Scope of Appointment captured first.
