Primary taxonomy

The primary taxonomy is the specialty an NPI record marks with the primary switch. The October 12, 2026 NPPES file allows up to 15 taxonomy codes. When the switch is Y, that code is primary. When no switch is Y, this site's hub counts use the first code on the row. The lookup is at /npi-lookup.

Primary taxonomy

Primary does not mean the only specialty. A record can list more than one code. The hub count uses one code so a person is not counted twice in the same city.
