Timely filing

Medicare timely filing is the deadline for a fee-for-service claim. For dates of service on or after January 1, 2010, the claim must be received within one calendar year of the date of service. A Medicare Advantage plan can set its own, shorter deadline in its contract. This page does not file claims.

Timely filing

The one-year rule is in the Medicare claims processing manual. Exceptions are narrow and are listed in that manual, not on this page.

Not automatically. Fee-for-service uses the one-year rule. A Medicare Advantage plan follows the deadline in its provider contract.
